ARKADY ALEKSNADROVICH KASPAROV (1936-2018)

Professor A.A. Kasparov is a professional clinical ophthalmologist and a skilled surgeon who mastered a wide variety of surgical techniques. He is a talented researcher with excellent organizing skills who manages to balance extensive administrative tasks with demanding research projects.

Professor A.A. Kasparov’s research is deeply rooted in theoretical models, is characterized by scientific novelty and offers practical application of the results. A great part of his team’s research was conducted in close collaboration with virologists, immunologists and microbiologists.

  • 1960-1962 - medical resident at the Ophthalmology Department of the First Tula City Hospital.
  • 1965 - defended his dissertation on the importance of active glaucoma prevention strategies in the Tula region. Candidate of Medical Sciences.
  • 1972-1974 – doctoral candidate, teaching assistant, associate professor at the Department of Eye Diseases, Sechenov First Moscow Medical Institute.
  • 1974 - defended his doctoral dissertation on clinical features and diagnosis of ocular herpes and treatment targeted at the causative agent and pathogenesis. Doctor of Medical Sciences.
  • Since 1974 - academic secretary at the National Research Institute of Eye Diseases.
  • Since 1980 – head of the Department of Reconstructive Eye Surgery, National Research Institute of Eye Diseases.
  • Head of the National Center for Ocular Herpes Diagnosis and Treatment. Renowned expert on viral diseases of the eye and reconstructive eye surgery.
  • Since 1997 – consulting professor at the Research Institute of Eye Diseases and “Novy Vzglyad” private eye clinic.

Scholarly work

  • A.A. Kasparov is the author of 613 research articles, 2 monographs (“Gerpes,” 1986; “Oftalmogerpes,” 1994, Meditsina publishing house), has 60 inventor’s certificates and patents and made 38 innovation proposals. Three doctoral dissertations and 17 candidate dissertations were successfully defended under his supervision.

  • 2003 – defended her doctoral dissertation on early diagnosis, laser treatment and surgical management of keratoconus.
  • Three candidate dissertations were successfully defended under the supervision of E.A. Kasparova:
    • A. Pur Akbarian – Treatment of recurrent corneal erosion of herpes origin
    • A.V. Zaytsev – Treatment of initial stages of bacterial corneal ulcers
    • O.I Sobkova – Treatment of neurotrophic keratitis associated with lagophthalmos
